A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck Johannesburg in the early hours of today. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake occurred at 02:30 AM local time, with its epicenter located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of the city center.

According to USGS data, the past day has witnessed significant seismic activity, with 48 earthquakes recorded worldwide. Of these, 149 earthquakes registered a magnitude of 1.5 or greater within the past 24 hours, while 841 earthquakes reached that threshold in the past week and 4041 in the past 30 days.
