The creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, has intentionally avoided using eyepatches on his pirate characters. Despite introducing other pirate stereotypes, such as peg legs (Zeff) and hook hands (Crocodile), Oda has consciously chosen to refrain from the classic eyepatch trope.In the One Piece 10th Treasures collectors' book, Oda revealed his reasoning behind this decision. He explained that he is purposely saving the eyepatch for a specific character who will appear closer to the end of the series. By doing so, Oda aims to create a visually impactful and memorable introduction for this yet-to-be-revealed pirate.
This strategy of deliberate omission further highlights Oda's meticulous planning and attention to detail when crafting the One Piece universe. It suggests that the eventual appearance of an eyepatched character will hold significant meaning and narrative weight, contributing to the overall story's climax.
